Robert Harold Dodson Jr., affectionately known as “Bobby” to many and “Papa” to his beloved granddaughters, passed away peacefully at the age of 82, surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong resident of the Nashville area, Bobby dedicated his life to service, both to his country and his community.
For 40 distinguished years, Bobby proudly served on the Metro Nashville Police department, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the citizens he swore to protect. His commitment to justice and his unwavering dedication made him a respected figure within the department. Prior to his career in law enforcement, Bobby bravely served his nation in the United States Navy, instilling in him a strong sense of duty and honor that he carried throughout his life.
Bobby was a devoted husband to his bride, Linda “Diane” Dodson, for 59 cherished years. Their enduring love and partnership served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Though many knew him as Captain Dodson, his most treasured title was “Papa” to his granddaughters, Hannah and Norah Dodson. He was a devoted father to his sons, Brian and Jason, offering them unwavering love and support.
A long-time member of the Charlotte Heights Church of Christ, Bobby’s faith was an integral part of his life. He found strength and community within his church family.
Bobby is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Dodson Sr. and Sarah Ashworth, his beloved wife, Linda “Diane” Dodson, and his son, Brian Dodson. He is survived by his loving son, Jason Dodson; his daughter-in-law, Abby Dodson; and his cherished granddaughters, Hannah and Norah Dodson. He also leaves behind his brother, Donald Dodson (Kay Stone); his sister, Teresa Dodson; his brother, Randall Dodson (Annette); his nephew, Barry Elkins (Tara); and his great-niece, Carmen Elkins.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, May 9, 2025, at 11AM, at Charlotte Heights Church of Christ, located at 6833 Charlotte Pike with Josh Barnett officiating. Interment will follow at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers, honoring Bobby’s life and legacy of service and love.
Visitation with the Dodson family will be on Thursday May 8th from 4PM until 7PM, then again on Friday from 10AM until the service time at 11AM, at all Charlotte Heights Church of Christ.
Bobby’s warm smile, his unwavering kindness, and his deep love for his family will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service and love will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

I became acquainted with the Dodson family many years ago at Bill Wilkerson Center. Diane and I became fast friends, and I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the whole family. Jason, I remember you so very well because my son Lem was in your classes. My sincere sympathy on the loss of your dad.
