Martha Ann Elliott (1930 – 2025)

Martha Ann Gambill Elliott died peacefully on September 16, 2025. She was born July 1, 1930, to Jessie Cornelius and William Wheless Gambill, Jr.

She attended Eakin and Woodmont Schools, later graduating from Ward-Belmont Preparatory School. In 1952, she earned a B.A. in English Literature from Vanderbilt University and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She then pursued graduate studies at the University of New Mexico. Returning to Nashville, she worked in the Vanderbilt alumni office, where she met and later married the late Don Elliott.

In 1962, Martha Ann moved to New York City, beginning a vibrant chapter of her life. She initially worked in merchandising for Genesco and after taking a work sabbatical to join Nelson Rockefeller’s 1968 presidential campaign, she helped found the investment advisory firm Auchincloss & Lawrence, where she served as a Vice President and board member. She would go on to become Director of Personnel at Warburg Pincus. She often said living in New York was the most enjoyable time of her life.

Martha Ann had a deep love of travel. Over the course of her life, she would travel to South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and all throughout Europe, often in the company of her dear friends and family members.

In 1982, Martha Ann returned to Nashville, where she continued her professional career at Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt Medical Center. Martha Ann was active in numerous civic and cultural organizations in Nashville, including the Hillmeade Garden Club, Historic Nashville, the Centennial Club, the Review Club, the International Study Club, The Harpeth Hall School, the National Society of Colonial Dames, and the Vanderbilt Alumni Association. Martha Ann was also a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Nashville.

Martha Ann’s greatest joy came from the friendships she built throughout her life. Many of these dear friends remained by her side, offering support and devotion until the very end.

Martha Ann was preceded in death by her sisters Cornelia Gambill Love (Robert) and Gloria Gambill Clark (Harold). She is survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great, great nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held in her honor at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Guestbook

  1. I extend my Sincerest Sympathies to Martha Ann Elliott’s gracious Family, whom I have known most of my Life from about 1950 at Robertson Academy through her niece Candace Love Dimitri. I remember having Lunch at Alumni Hall at Vanderbilt with Candy, and Mr. Don Elliott and Martha Ann on many occasions. Martha Ann lived such an interesting Life and was so charming to everyone who met her. I pray for Comfort and Blessings for all of her family.
