He Is Not Gone
Ease your grief, he is not gone,
For in your heart he lingers on.
His smile, his laugh, his special way,
Will comfort you from day to day.
You’ll feel his presence in the breeze,
That dances gently through the trees.
And it’s his face that you shall see,
When you’re in need of company.
At any time you can recall,
The love you shared…you saved it all.
And in time, more than anything,
You’ll find peace in remembering.

Charles Russell Curtis Jr., 92 of Nashville, TN passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on October 2, 2024.

Born in Washington DC on October 30, 1931, he was the son of the late Charles Russell Curtis, Sr. and Gertrude Stacia Dintaman Curtis. He was preceded in death by his 3 siblings, Sallie, Miles “Bucky”, and Hugh.

He was a 1949 graduate of Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD where he was a track and football star who shattered many records, earning him many awards and scholarships. Directly after high school he worked as draftsman mechanic and the E.R. Kramer Company.

He enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and served for 4 years during the Korean War. He received the National Defense Service Metal and Good Conduct Metal. He enjoyed watching war documentaries and reading books about WWII and like his brothers, he was a diehard Redskins fan.

Charles, known to those closest to him as Mick, was a self employed commercial artist for most of his life, working many of his early years in advertising, but known mostly for his mask business, The Savage Eye, which still has a strong following today. He was often referred to as a jack of all trades, being exceptional in drawing, painting, sculpting, mold making, and teaching artwork. He didn’t believe in retiring, and taught art up until his passing. His passion for all things art brought him immense joy and he was always eager to share his knowledge with others. He is survived by his beloved companion in life, Susie; his children, Charlie, Stephanie, Bernie, Shawn, Monique and Nicole; his many grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved and cherished with all his heart. His closest niece, Pam was like another daughter to him. He adored her and appreciated how much she cared for him too.

Mick will be remembered for being incredibly athletic and strong, and for always looking at least 20 years younger than his age. He cared a lot about his physical fitness and was always an incredible athlete. He was a track and football star in high school, and excelled at playing tennis later in his life. He continued to exercise almost everyday. His routine consisted of his own form of calisthenics and riding his bike for many miles. He enjoyed sharing his exercise program and fitness philosophy with anyone he met.

A celebration of life will be held on February 15, 2025 in San Diego, California.
