Daniel Scott McRae, 51, died peacefully on January 30, 2026, in Nashville, TN, after a hard-fought battle with peritoneal carcinoma cancer.
Scott was born on September 13, 1974, in Statesboro, GA, to Johnny and Gail McRae of Swainsboro, GA. Scott always liked to say that he “was raised in and by the loving small town of Swainsboro.” He attended Swainsboro High School and was a beloved member of the class of 1993. Scott went on to play baseball for one year at Brewton Parker Christian University in Mount Vernon, GA, but finished his college career at the University of Georgia in Athens, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration.
Scott spent the last 20 years of his professional life working for Baxter Healthcare, enthusiastically serving his customers and their patients. He was well-respected among both his coworkers and his customers and was honored with many awards during his time at Baxter. He thought of his longtime colleagues as his Baxter Family.
In his personal life, Scott was very active in his community, his church and in the lives of his children. Scott enjoyed attending concerts and listening to music, sitting in a deer stand, playing golf with his buddies, any kind of fishing outing, and both playing and spectating any sporting event. He was passionate about Georgia Bulldogs football and had a life-long love affair with the Atlanta Braves – in good times and bad, and in sickness and in health.
Scott fiercely loved his wife of 20 years, Tina Sevier McRae of Nashville, TN, whom he met while in college but didn’t date until they were in their late 20s while living in Atlanta as young professionals. They married in 2005 in St. Simon’s Island, GA. Scott and Tina had four children from 2006 to 2011 and resided in Brookhaven, GA, until 2015, when they moved their family to Nashville.
The love for his wife was rivaled only by the love he had for his children. Scott was a role model for “girl dads” and struck the perfect balance of father and best friend to his only son. He coached countless sports teams for his four children during the last 15 years, including soccer, basketball, baseball and flag football. In the words of a father of one of Scott’s players, “Some coaches are knowledgeable and some know how to coach kids, but very few are both. You are one of the few!”
In addition to coaching multiple seasons during seven years of his son’s baseball teams, he also coached several seasons of one of his daughter’s all-girl flag football team, the Heartbreakers. Although they were the only all-girl team in the league, the Heartbreakers won the championship title several years in a row. Teaching the girls how to beat the boys was an absolute highlight of his life. Scott drove for field trips, participated in school fundraising events and he was “a regular” in the fan section of just about any event taking place at St. Henry School or Father Ryan High School, regardless of whether he had a child participating in the event or not.
Scott was also an avid supporter of many causes that he deemed important and worthy, including Camp Marymount in Fairview, TN, The Wounded Warriors Project and various other causes that were near and dear to his friends’ hearts. If support involved participating in fundraiser runs or golf tournaments with those friends, it was even better in his opinion.
Scott loved to travel and visit with his family in St. Simon’s Island, GA, and at Devils Lake in Manitou Beach, MI. He was always up for meeting his friends to cheer on the Dawgs, either at home or away games. And, he especially loved the many trips he and Tina took with their children, on which they made so many beautiful and unforgettable memories, including their most recent trip to Spain this past summer.
Scott is survived by his wife of 20 years, Christina “Tina” Sevier McRae, as well as his four children: Magdelena “Maggie” Smith McRae, Catherine “Cate” Ann McRae, Eva Jane McRae and Daniel Sevier McRae. He is also leaves behind his two beloved fur babies, Blu and Minnie.
Scott is also survived by his mother, Carolyn “Gail” Smith McRae, and his older brother, John Christopher “Chris” McRae of St. Simon’s Island, as well as many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews. Scott was preceded in death by his father John “Johnny” Daniel McRae of Swainsboro, as well as his beloved grandparents, many aunts and uncles, and his cousin Paul “Mark” Smith of Kite, GA.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to our donor-advised fund that we have set up in memory of Scott, so we can make meaningful and impactful donations to the philanthropies Scott championed. Examples of the donations we intend to make in his name include paying for sports fees for children to join teams, for children to attend summer camp, and support for veteran services, just to name a few.
