David Allen Sauerland

David Allen Sauerland, age 84, of Franklin, Tennessee, passed away suddenly at his residence on Friday, October 25, 2026.

Dave was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Louise, with whom he shared 61 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a life centered on family, friendship, and adventure. He was a loving father to Christine Scruggs, father-in-law to Patrick Scruggs, and proud grandfather to Evan Scruggs, Olivia Gild and grandfather in law to Elliot Gild. Known affectionately as “Poppy,” he found his greatest joy in spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, creating memories, sharing stories, and making them laugh with his wonderful sense of humor.

Born on June 25, 1942, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Dave was the son of the late Russell and Eleanor Sauerland. He grew up in southeastern Pennsylvania as the eldest of three children. He was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Hendricks, and is survived by his brother, Jack Sauerland.

Dave valued education and lifelong learning. He earned his undergraduate degree from Penn State University and later received a master’s degree from Trenton State College. He began his career teaching high school metal and wood shop in southeastern Pennsylvania before transitioning into a successful career in sales, where his strong work ethic, practical knowledge, and ability to connect with people earned the trust and respect of colleagues and clients alike.

Throughout his life, Dave never met a stranger. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help anyone in need. In retirement, he became “Mr. Fix-It,” always ready with a toolbox, practical advice, and a helping hand. Whether repairing something around the house, helping a neighbor with a project, or solving a problem others couldn’t, Dave found genuine joy in serving others.

Early in their marriage, Dave and Louise lived in Pennsylvania before spending brief periods in Southwest Florida and Lexington, Kentucky. They later settled in Louisville, Kentucky, where Dave was a founding member of Ascension Lutheran Church. After 25 years in Bowling Green, Kentucky, they recently relocated to Franklin, Tennessee.

Dave and Louise shared a love of travel and were fortunate to explore much of the world together. They especially enjoyed family road trips and many memorable cruises. A proud Penn State fan, Freemason, lifelong car enthusiast, and lover of sweets, especially chocolate, Dave embraced life with enthusiasm and kindness. His warmth, quick wit, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the emergency care team at Williamson Medical Center for their compassion, professionalism, and efforts on Dave’s behalf. They are also deeply thankful for the kindness, concern, and support shown by his neighbors, whose willingness to help reflected the same spirit of community and friendship that Dave valued throughout his life.

Dave’s legacy is one of kindness, laughter, service, and unwavering devotion to family and friends. His joyful presence will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
