Dr. Albert "Teensie" Roach
June 25, 1949 ~ December 3, 2022
Dr. Albert “Teensie” Roach, 73, died December 3, 2022, after a short illness with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Beth Landman Roach, his daughter, Katherine McMillen, grandsons, Davis and Jackson Crawford, his son and best friend Taylor Roach, wife Tommie Sue Roach, grandson, Clayton Roach, and granddaughter, Finley Roach. Dr. Roach graduated Overton High School, Lambuth College and the University of Tennessee, College of Pharmacy, where he received his Doctor of Pharmacy. His career began at St. Thomas Hospital as the first Clinical Pharmacist for 20 years and then continued as Director of Medical Affairs for Astra Merck Pharmaceuticals, Astra Zeneca, and Ironwood Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Roach was also a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology. Al was a smart, loving, kind gentleman with a great sense of humor. His affection for his family was apparent in everything he did. He loved to spend time with his children and “grands” and fish and hunt with his son Taylor and all the grandchildren. A friend once said, “Everyone should know someone like Al Roach. He made you a better person for knowing him and made the world a better place.” A funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Joseph McMahon at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3001 Belmont Boulevard, Nashville, TN 37212, on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at 11AM. There will be visitation and a reception immediately following Mass at Hunting Hollow Farm, 370 Vaughn Road, Nashville, TN 37221. The family would like to thank Dr. Doug Holiday, Dr. Tad Porter, Dr. Sarah Clark, Dr. Jeff Datillo, Dr. Nassif Azzi, Dr. Joseph Parker and the nursing staff on 7B at St. Thomas Hospital for their excellent care during this most difficult time. I had the privilege of calling Albert my friend for over 25 years. Our path in life crossed when Al came to work at Astra Merck in the early 90’s. He was a true professional, a great colleague, a master networker and always the guy you wanted on your team. His southern charm, quick wit and ability to get things done proved to be a great combination in his professional life. We also shared the love of the outdoors and when I invited Al to join my on my annual trip to Canada to fish walleyes, he instantly said yes. Every year after that he was the first to respond, often times within seconds of the email going out. I could always count on Al as he evolved into one of the cornerstones of the trip. Our trip won’t be the same without him physically there, but he did promise me he would be there in spirit each and every year. I will always raise a glass of pinot in his honor to acknowledge my long time fishing buddy and dear friend, I have included a photo of the group from this years trip. You can see Al in the back row on the right side in his SWWL sweatshirt. Albert, please know that you have had a significant impact on so many people throughout your life. God speed to you my friend.
I was on Al’s MSL team at Ironwood. Dr. Roach was the ideal manager; he trusted us to do our jobs, was supportive, caring, and most importantly, fun. Al and I shared the same birthday, June 25th. I will miss waking up on my birthday to text Al to wish him a happy birthday with a Pinot wine 🍷 emoji and having him text me back right away to wish me the same. Q: How did you meet Dr. Albert? A: I was the first student from UT Pharmacy School that studied with Al at St. Thomas Hospital. He was a wonderful teacher and a very kind man that loved to laugh. He will certainly be missed. Thank you for all the knowledge you shared with me, Al, when I was a pharmacist at St. Thomas West.
My thoughts and prayers are with Beth and the entire Roach family at this most difficult time. I was extremely fortunate to be able to work with Al both at AstraZeneca and then for nearly 10 years at Ironwood. He was a dear friend and one of the warmest, friendliest people I have ever met; always with a smile on his face. While I am heartbroken that he left us much too soon, I will also smile thinking about him, the fun we had, the laughs we shared, and I will keep his smile, his laugh, and his humor in my heart. With sincere condolences.
Al was one of the friendliest people I have ever met. I truly enjoyed working with Al but I enjoyed sharing a friendship with him even more. He was also very good at what he did, hard working and extremely knowledgeable. We shared a love of MGB sports cars and Al introduced me to his mechanic for which I am grateful. My condolences to Beth and all his family. Rest In Peace Al.
Albert was a mentor and a friend. I followed Al in his role at AZ when he moved back to Nashville. A good move in my book, as he was much happier subsequently. He always had time for me when I needed advice and was happy to “learn me things” I needed to know to do the job well. He was also a friend whom I enjoyed many good times with, be it fishing, eating good food or drinking fine wine. He told the same jokes over and over and I laughed every time. He was a man in full and he will be missed. My condolences to Beth and the family.
