James Clyde "Jim" Barlow

James Clyde Barlow of Nashville, TN passes away at 75 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Clyde Barlow on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at his home in Nashville, TN. Born June 29, 1947, in New Orleans, Jim was quick to catch the adventure bug. His family moved often, traveling across the southern US for work, which was likely the driving force behind Jim’s own love for travel. As a professional he was driven by adventure, traveling for work overseas to places such as Scotland, Saudi Arabia, Peru, Mexico, and Japan. As an independent small-business owner, he enjoyed frequent travels to every corner of the US as a Manufacturer’s Representative. When not working he could often be found roaming the highways in search of the next best RV campsite with his wife, golfing, walking miles of sandy beach, or entertaining friends around the firepit in the backyard. When he wasn’t singing Oldies behind the steering wheel he could be found, wrench in hand, under the hood of someone’s car, fixing any sort of appliance at a neighbor’s house, refurbishing his church, clearing trees for friends, providing support to his community after flash floods, delivering generators on foot to friends after tornados, and the list of his voluntary services goes on without end. Jim’s passion for doing and giving of his time to his family, friends, and community was without compare and kept him active in serving others until his very last day. Jim’s other passion was food… PERIOD. He could spin tales of meals he’d experienced 50 years prior, and that was exactly what food was to him; an experience to remember down to the very last detail. His stories of the Duck à l'Orange he ate every night for a week in Scotland, feasts at yards-long tables in Saudi, meals served by Peruvian families found in the back alleys of Lima, massive spreads of sushi in Japan. And then there were the meals of his own creation: world-famous cheese grits, monstrous pots of chili, potato salad from scratch, and Barlow’s Barbeque Sauce. His love for cooking was as important to him as his love for fixing and he was more than happy to share with anyone who showed up at the table. In addition to his numerous passions Jim was a man of faith, serving his community through his church. He was a longstanding member of the Bellevue Masonic Lodge #716, where he served as the Worshipful Master in 1993, and was well known for his cooking prowess at their annual Barbeque Dinners and Country Breakfasts. He was also a member of the Flying Fez Club and Greeters Unit with the Al Menah Shrine in Nashville. Jim was a steadfast pillar to his family and friends, both near and far, and the void his absence creates in our lives will leave a hole no amount of cheese grits can fill. Jim is preceded in death by his mother and father, Clyde and Eralee Barlow, and sister, Sherry Cooper. He is survived by Margo, his wife of 45 years; daughter, Shelly Lovins; son, Chris Peck; and grandson, Ryan Peck. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, August 27, 2022, starting at 4pm at the Bellevue Christian Church, 7201 Old Harding Pike, Nashville, TN 37221. In lieu of flowers, the Barlow Family requests that Jim’s memory be honored with donations made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children at ohiolovetotherescue.org.
