James (Jim) Ethan Phillips, DMD Died peacefully Sunday evening, April 2nd. He was born April 17th, 1933, in Livingston, Tn. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Jo Phillips, his daughters Margaret Garrett Greathouse (Lee), and Macie Phillips Smitherman (Drew). His grandchildren are Macie Garrett Griffin (Justin), Madeline Garrett Walsh (Ed), Mark Clay Garrett, Jr, James William Smitherman, Benjamin Allen Smitherman, one great granddaughter, Lily James Walsh. Jim graduated Western Kentucky University in 1953. He was a member of ROTC and went on to serve in the Airforce for 6 years. He graduated from the University of Louisville Dental School in 1962. He practiced Dentistry in Nashville for over 40 years. At one time he was president of the Nashville Dental Society, and the Green Hills Exchange Club. He also volunteered at the interfaith Dental Clinic throughout his career and in retirement. Jim and Mary Jo enjoyed many great trips during life. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed having his private pilot’s license. Other volunteer activities included President of Nashville Aquatic Club, President of the Alumni Association at WKU. Jim was also very involved in his grandchildren’s lives and loved watching their sporting events. We want to thank his wonderful caregivers from Blakeford at Home, Debbie Mulcahy, Rita Claybrooks, and Annie Caruthers. Funeral Service will be held Monday April 10th, Woodmont Christian Church, 3601 Hillsboro Pike. Visitation at 1:00pm and Celebration of Life Service at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Woodmont Christian Church, Interfaith Dental Clinic of Nashville, or the charity of your choice.
