Katherine Anne “Kathy” Brown of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on October 22, 2026.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Kathy was the daughter of the late Jim and Jean Brown of Tega Cay, South Carolina. In 1970, she immigrated to the United States with her family, beginning a new chapter in a life marked by determination, independence, generosity, and a deep commitment to helping others.
Kathy earned her undergraduate degree in history from the University of Connecticut. She began her professional career as a paralegal at a law firm in Atlanta, Georgia. Recognizing that she was already performing much of the work entrusted to attorneys, Kathy decided to pursue a law degree herself. She attended Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville, Tennessee, launching what would become a long and accomplished legal career.
Following law school, Kathy joined the Nashville law firm of former U.S. Senator Howard Baker, where she developed her expertise in constitutional law and litigation. Throughout her career, she practiced with several respected firms, including Dodson, Harris, Robinson & Aden and Willis & Knight, PLC. She also served in the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office before establishing her own private practice.
Together with her law partner, Tyree Harris IV, Kathy founded Harris Brown, a firm where she devoted much of her practice to helping women navigate difficult legal circumstances. Her work reflected her belief that the law should be a means of helping people, and she continued practicing until her passing.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Kathy had a remarkable gift for bringing people together. An extraordinary cook, she found great pleasure in preparing meals and sharing them with family, friends, and neighbors. Her legendary platters of homemade holiday cookies were eagerly anticipated each year and became a cherished tradition among those fortunate enough to receive them.
Kathy was an avid reader and enjoyed spending hours immersed in books and creative pursuits, particularly crafting. She was generous not only with her hospitality but also with her time, knowledge, and professional talents. Whether offering legal guidance, helping a neighbor, or volunteering her time, she gave freely of herself and rarely hesitated to help.
She was especially devoted to her Longwood community in Nashville, where she contributed countless hours supporting the homeowners association board and neighborhood activities. Her willingness to help reflected her genuine care for the people around her.
And, of course, there were her beloved cats. They were her treasured companions and held a very special place in her heart.
Kathy is survived by her brothers, Mike Brown and his spouse, Vereen, and Douglas Brown and his spouse, Kimberly Melton.
Kathy will be remembered for her sharp intellect, independent spirit, generosity, wonderful cooking, and her enduring willingness to stand up for and help others. She built a life of purpose through her profession, her friendships, her community, and the countless acts of kindness that touched those around her.
Her legacy lives on not only in the work she accomplished, but in the lives she made better along the way.
