There are countless affirmations often used to describe the sum total of a person’s life; the essence of what made them who and what they were throughout their existence. For Mychael Lederer-Morihisa, the one that comes to mind for me is that he was a creative force of nature. Mychael was an artist, musician, designer, technologist, and teacher. But above all, he was a loving husband, father, and friend. And those last three are not meant as simple descriptors. They are the most important aspects of who and what he was, and they held the sum total of everything else he ever achieved. For Mychael, life revolved around balance, be that in his art, his work, or his family life. He was ridiculously gifted and yet quietly self-effacing. But his singular point of pride was his family, for they were an extension of himself through every aspect of his being. They shared his passions, his love, and his creative energy. To his friends, Mychael was a warm and giving person. He was sometimes quick to judge but not out of spite or envy, but rather as a way of creating a cautionary observation for himself and those for whom he cared. Always willing to share, Mychael was the epitome of enthusiastic collaboration. He had such a vast repository of knowledge and expertise in his various fields, yet he was always receptive to learn and explore new avenues of improvement. He gave with passion and abandon, and never lost his sense of curious innocence and wonderment. One of Mychael’s last creative endeavors was the release of his latest music album, Power of Three. It was an aural voyage of discovery dedicated to the potentiality of love in its most symbolic and elemental forms - harmony, wisdom, and understanding. Ever the consummate professional, he took time to fuse together new songs with remastered tracks from earlier releases. He wanted the listener not only to recall but to re-imagine. Each song reaches out to reawaken a sense of wonderment and odyssey in the listener that are often subdued into indifference by the lackluster and one dimensionality of today’s mainstream music. Like everything he created, there was much thought put into his work that gave it that delightful sense of nostalgia. This was not unintentional; it was an homage to style. A nod to an ideal and a journey that began years ago with those musicians whom he admired most, and now were re-imagined through Mychael’s unique vision to enlighten, entertain, and pay tribute to that inner tower of everlasting youth, promise, and boundless sense of imagination. Mychael will no doubt be missed by many, and rightfully so. He left a lasting mark on so many, and his lessons, creative force, and his smile will endure in the hearts of those he loved most. To celebrate his amazing legacy of life, we now honor his memory by giving the gift of life back to the world he loved and admired so much. Through the auspices of the National Forests Organization’s aim to reforest millions of acres of public land, each $1 dollar you contribute to Mychael’s memorial will fund the planting of 1 tree in his honor. Like the legacy of life, he planted in the hearts of all who knew and loved him, these trees will aid in providing the gifts of clean water, air, and a refuge for wildlife that will endure for generations to come.
