Sonia “Ree “ Chavez, age 59, passed away November 2, 2022 at Vanderbilt Hospital after a brief illness. Ree was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia H. Torlay and sister, Karen Lynn Larkin. Survived by her sons, Matthew Darryl Smith, Patrick Franklin Counts, Charles William “Will” Smotherman; grandchildren, Bentlee Smotherman, Delanee Smotherman; sisters, Leah Brooke Hudgens, Wendy Law Torlay, Joi D. Schurman (Erich), numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. Ree had a special devotion and love for her three sons. She was selfless and gave everything to her boys, especially Patrick, who has Niemann-Pick disease. A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at Western Hills Church, 7565 Charlotte Pike, Nashville, TN 37209. Memorial contributions may be to: National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation, Inc. (NNPDF) Services conducted by Compassion Funeral and Cremation Services. 615-857-9955.

In the 1981 she introduced me to my sons father. We had some great times back then. I remember her fun spirt and she was stunning. That beautiful smile. Rest In Peace my sweet friend.
Sweet sweet Ree, I am so sorry to hear this. In conversation, we had a lot of folks in common we’d known thru the years and had decided we were ‘cousins’! Such a wonderful friend, I will miss you! Many prayers for the boys and the rest of the family. Love you!
I Had The Awesome Opportunity Of Working With Ree At Betty Lou’s, She Wasn’t The Biggest Fan Of Karaoke But We Made It Work And Had Fun Together, It Was Always Fun Acting Like I Was Going To Get Her Up On Stage To Sing .
So sorry for the the loss of your dear sister! During the time she was my sister-in-law she was very kind and caring to me any family! I pray God’s comfort for you and your family during this difficult time!

Q: How did you meet Sonia? A: I met Ree at a little bar called Betty Lou’s many years ago, and loved her from the minute I met her. She had the most beautiful color of blonde hair I have ever seen and a smile that radiates the whole room. She wasn’t shy by any means and always spoke her mind. I loved that about her. She was a ball of fire but a beautiful person all in one. I will Always cherish all those fun times especially that one. Lol. Rest In Peace Ree. Until we meet agin on the other side.
