William Ozwin Dysart Jr.

William “Bill” Ozwin Dysart, Jr., a Vietnam war hero, passed away on July 14th,
2024. He was 77 years old.
In 1965, Bill graduated from West End High School in Nashville, Tennessee. He went on to serve in the United States Air Force from March 1966 to December 1969, serving in the Vietnam War as a Weapons Mechanic and Aerial Gunner on the AC-47 Gunship, “Spooky”. He and his Brothers in Arms flew in the 4th Air Commando Squadron, also known as, the 3rd Air Commando Squadron and later the 3rd Special Operations Squadron.
Bill loved and respected his country and his Brothers he served with in Vietnam. He received numerous medals including: Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, 4 Distinguished Flying Cross medals, and 20LC and 70LC medals awarded for exemplary conduct during a three-year period of active military service in Special Operations Groups 3511 on November 16th, 1968, and Special Operations Group 88 on January 7th, 1969. He was also awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and numerous Air Medals for single acts of merit and in combat for meritorious service in combat zones in Vietnam.
Bill’s passion for fine cuisine, art and music was not only a reflection of his refined tastes but also a celebration of the warmth and camaraderie these indulgences brought to his life and those he held dear. As we bid farewell to Bill, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, a journey marked with laughter, adventure and an indomitable spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Emily Marcile Mueller of South Carolina, grandchild, Avalyn “Elliott” Martin of South Carolina, stepdaughter, Mary Sarratt Perkins of Tennessee, nephew, James “Jay” Edward Beasley of Texas.
Bill is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Frances Leftwich Ray of Tennessee, father, William Ozwin Dysart, Sr. of Tennessee and Sister, Mary Marcile Beasley of Tennessee.
Bill leaves behind his loving and close friends: Ms. Winnie Espy, Kenny Polly, Pat and Bill Marks, Bill Bomar, Joe Hines, Dick and Kathy Rice, Pete Epps, Steve Bass, Betty Joe Steele and Caregiver, Tracey Cason.
Brothers in Arms: Captain Philip Budd, Dale Steele, Jack Pate, Bobby Brock, Dale Knoll, John Shaver, Mike Acosta, Ben Renzey, Morris Hunter, Steve Montani, Jack Stratton and Bill Clayton.
Honorary Pallbearers: James “Jay” Beasley, Captain Philip Budd, Dale Steele, Jack Pate, Bobby Brock, Dale Knoll, John Shaver, Mike Acosta, Kenny Polly, Bill Marks, Joe Hines, Dick Rice, Pete Epps, Karen Fields and Mariana Carty.
On August 16th, 2024, there will be a Celebration of Life held at:
Loveless Cafe 8400 TN-100, Nashville, TN 37221 at 10:00am to 12:00pm.
Following the Celebration of Life, Bill will be laid to rest at:
Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery
7931 McCrory Lane, Nashville, TN 37221 at 1:00pm
